This exhibition will feature new works created by contemporary artist Taisuke Morimura, as well as precious art works and archival materials preserved by the Takashimaya Art Museum, with the theme of 'art', 'daily life', and 'department stores'. It will look back on the history of Takashimaya's efforts to provide people with a life full of beauty in 'clothing, food, and housing', and connect life and art, while exploring the 'possibility of beauty' in modern life through Morimura's unique perspective and works. Highlights 1. Travel through the scenes of the masters who shaped the times and the 120 years of Takashimaya Art Department. This exhibition will look back on the 120-year history of Takashimaya Art Department, which has always created 'seasonal beauty', through the perspective of Taisuke Morimura, with the themes of 'clothing, food, and housing'. It will feature self-portrait works where Morimura himself appears as Van Gogh, new works created for this exhibition, and dioramas that recreate the display scenes of the time. You can experience a space where past and present intersect. 2. Famous paintings, designs, and literary figures! Department stores are really interesting! Charlotte Perriand, Le Corbusier, Taro Okamoto, Akiko Yosano, Sotaro Hayami, Taro Okamoto... Famous literary figures and art masters familiar from textbooks have connected people's lives and art through the department store. This exhibition will display works and materials collected through Takashimaya's art cultural activities, selected by Morimura. 3. A little more precious than usual daily life. Encounter 'beauty' as gifted by Morimura. Moriyama says that the 'excitement' felt in department stores as a child may have been the 'aesthetic culture' that lives there. Through works and exhibition spaces, this exhibition will once again question the role and charm of department stores in modern times. What is Takashimaya Art Department? 'Takashimaya Art Department' by Tetsusai Tomigawa, 1919, ink on paper. The origin of Takashimaya Art Department was the 'Modern Masters Hundred Paintings Exhibition' held at Kyoto Store, Osaka Store, and Tokyo Store in 1909. This exhibition, which introduced masters and emerging artists, was very popular and marked the beginning of the company's history of handling art works. Since then, the company has continued to hold a variety of exhibitions, commissioning works from living artists and holding exhibitions that were ahead of their time or in response to the times, thus contributing to the development of Japanese art culture. This time, in preparation for the 120th anniversary in 2028, Takashimaya will hold a commemorative exhibition titled 'Takashimaya Art Department 120th Anniversary' over two years, with the theme 'Art Beyond, Expansion and Integration'. This exhibition will explore new expressions and values, while building on tradition, and will continue to contribute to the development of art culture by acting as a bridge between artists and customers.
